Can I change the license plate on an e-vignette?

Changing the license plate on an e-vignette can only be done by the Swiss motorway operator.

You can transfer the e-vignette to a new licence plate if the vehicle owner stays the same and the change is due to things like:

  • Moving and receiving a new plate
  • Loss or theft of the original plate
  • Re-registration with a corrected plate number

The official Via Portal allows this change if vehicle and owner remain identical, and you must upload supporting documents (e.g. old and new registration) to confirm it.

  • For Swiss-registered vehicles, this can usually be done directly in the e-vignette portal by selecting the ticket and using the “change registration number” option with the required documents.

  • If you have a non-Swiss plate and need to change it (e.g., typo, new plate after registration), you typically must submit an application to the Swiss motorway operator with proof that the vehicle and owner are the same. The approval can take a few days.
