General questions

What is the Swiss PSVA / LSVA?

The PSVA is a flat-rate heavy vehicle charge applied to certain heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 tonnes when using the Swiss public road network. Additionally to the PSVA no Swiss motorway vignette has to be purchased.

LSVA is a toll charged per kilometre driven on all Swiss roads by heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes that are used for goods transport.

Unlike the mileage-based Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe (LSVA), the PSVA does not depend on distance driven. It must also be paid for travel on all public Swiss roads, not just motorways.

Vehicles subject to the PSVA include:

  • Heavy passenger cars and large motorhomes/campers over 3.5 t
  • Trailers and caravans exceeding 3.5 t (sometimes via the towing vehicle)
  • Coaches, buses, and other passenger transport vehicles over 3.5 t
  • Tractors and motor carriages
  • Showmen’s and circus vehicles
  • Goods vehicles with a maximum speed ≤ 45 km/h
